Prescriptions

Ordering repeat prescriptions

The easiest ways to order repeat prescriptions are:

  • using your NHS account (through the NHS website or in the NHS App)
  • using the GP online system: SystmOnline
  • in writing, please use either the tear off slip from your prescription, or the forms available in the practice. You may request the prescription by post (but please enclose an SAE if you wish the prescription to be posted to you)
  • dropping in a repeat slip to your local pharmacy

We regret that requests for repeat prescriptions cannot be taken verbally over the telephone at the practice, however you can contact your preferred pharmacy and they can request it for you.

Collecting your prescription

Information:

We work closely with local pharmacies to manage prescription requests. The practice is responsible for reviewing requests and issuing prescriptions, which are then sent to your chosen pharmacy.

Processing times vary depending on how your request is made and the type of medication:

– If you request a medication that is already on your repeat prescription list using our online system or app, it can usually be processed within 3 working days.

– If your request requires a GP review, or if it is made through a pharmacy, additional time is needed. This allows for the pharmacy to forward the request and for a GP to assess and approve it. In these cases, please allow at least 5 working days.

Please note that these timescales do not include the time your pharmacy may need to prepare and dispense your medication.

For updates on when your prescription will be ready, please contact your pharmacy directly. We kindly ask that you do not call the practice for this information.

You will need to choose a pharmacy to collect your prescription from. We call this nominating a pharmacy.

You can change your nominated pharmacy at any time:

Questions about your prescription

If you have questions about your medicine, your local pharmacists can answer these. They can also answer questions on medicines you can buy without a prescription.

The NHS website has information on how your medicine works, how and when to take it, possible side effects and answers to your common questions.

Medication reviews

Patients on repeat medication will be asked to see a doctor, nurse practitioner or practice nurse at least once a year to review these regular medications and notification should appear on your repeat slip.

Please ensure that you book an appropriate appointment to avoid unnecessary delays to further prescriptions.

These services are not available to non-registered patients.

What to do with old medicines

Take it to the pharmacy you got it from or bring it in to the surgery. Do not put it in your household bin or flush it down the toilet.

Many pharmacies are open until late and at weekends. You do not need an appointment.

Most pharmacies have a private room where you can discuss issues with pharmacy staff.
